Pier 2 in Mexico’s southern Puebla state will use 33 2MW machines from its compatriot wind turbine supplier Gamesa.

The project, Iberdrola's fourth wind farm in Mexico and being developed with local partner ILER, will cost $120m and power 25,000 homes once complete, said the company.

Sited at a 2.5km altitude, Pier 2 is the first time Iberdrola has used an advanced simulation system called Sedar, which it created in conjunction with the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC).

Iberdrola said the system uses the MareNostrum supercomputer to pinpoint the best turbine location taking into account all factors, including the total facility lifecycle.
