Windlab project gains Ohio approval

Regulators in Ohio have approved an application from Windlab Developments USA to build and operate a 60MW wind farm that will utilize 25 Nordex 2.4MW N117 turbines.

The project is the first approved since mid-June when Governor John Kasich signed into law more restrictive wind turbine siting requirements.

However, the law does not take effect until 15 September and Windlab's project met existing project siting requirements, an Ohio Power Siting Board spokesman tells Recharge.

The wind industry contends the new rules will make it difficult, if not impossible, to proceed with an estimated $2.5bn worth of projects currently under development.

The board's certificate will allow the US subsidiary of Australian developer Windlab Systems to site the project on 18.6sq km of leased land in northern Huron County.

Nordex will import the nacelles from Rostock, Germany, as it closed a manufacturing facility in Arkansas last year.

According to the Siting Board, Windlab expects to have the facility in commercial operation by yearend 2015.
