Met Office launches German service

The UK Met Office has launched its renewable-energy services in Germany, in response to the market's coming shift towards offshore wind.

Products that will be available in Germany include solutions for site screening, development and operations, such as the Virtual Met Mast, a site-specific wind analysis model-based tool, and the Virtual Met Mast Plus, a hub-height wind prediction tool tohelp select the best onshore and offshore sites.

"In Germany our focus will be on development, operations and maintenance. We also expect our seasonal forecasting capabilities to play a prominent role," says Met Office head of renewables Michelle Spillar.

According to the Global Wind Energy Council, by 2020 German installed onshore wind will have increased by 40% to reach 45GW, while offshore capacity is expected to rise by 1,460% to 6GW.
