The strategy will leverage existing regional assets such as barges, port infrastructure and local manufacturing companies, according to LEEDCo, a public-private consortium that is developing “Project Icebreaker.”
In May, the US Energy Department awarded LEEDCo a one-year, $3m research grant to help “de-risk” the six-turbine project and to complete front-end engineering. DOE’s goal is for the developer to advance the design to “deployment readiness.”
