The $98m centre will be built at an old naval base on the Cooper River in North Charleston.

It will be capable of full-scale, highly-accelerated testing of advanced drivetrain systems for wind turbines in the 5MW to 15MW range, giving US vendors a chance to test larger units at home instead of in Europe.

The site is adjacent to existing rail and dockside infrastructure, essential for handling the heavy components.
