Electrawinds, IFC plan Kenya 90MW
A fund run by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has joined Belgian developer Electrawinds in a bid to build a 90MW wind farm in Kenya.
Electrawinds has been working on development of the Mpeketoni wind farm since 2011, and says a co-operation deal with IFC InfraVentures will give a boost to the €180m ($233m) project.
The partners plan to install between 36 and 45 turbines, depending on model used, on an 800-hectare site 20km from the port of Lamu in southeast Kenya.
Electrawinds and IFC InfraVentures have set up a joint development team, which hopes to sign a power purchase agreement and begin work on the project next year.
Electrawinds says the involvement of IFC InfraVentures will help secure finance.
Earlier this week Spanish turbine manufacturer Gamesa won a 14MW deal to equip a wind farm near the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
