The Swedish retail giant says it is buying the wind farm in order to power its stores in Belfast and Dublin.

The turbines will generate 25GWh of electricity, the same as would be needed to power some 5,500 houses a year. The wind farm is expected to be operational in early 2014 at which point Ikea will purchase the facility.

As part of the deal Mainstream will continue to operate and maintain the wind farm on behalf of Ikea for its 20-year lifespan.
