The VIII project, as the utility calls it, represents a potential $1.9bn investment for as many as 656 turbines.
MidAmerican has not named possible turbine suppliers. In its filing to the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), it had requested a decision by regulators by 1 September to enable it to take advantage of current economic opportunities associated with turbine supply.
Given the sluggish US wind market and potential size of project orders, MidAmerican would appear to be in good position to secure unit price discounts from any supplier.
