The losing bidder after six rounds was a subsidiary of US developer Apex Wind based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), which conducted the auction, had prequalified six other companies. The agency estimates the 472.6sq km “Wind Energy Area” located 37.8km from the coast has the potential to support 2GW of commercial wind generation – enough power for more than 700,000 average-size homes.
