The prototype 3MW "hybrid" drive-train, which combines a two-stage-planetary gearbox and permanent-magnet generator, will be connected to the grid and commissioned later this month.

Following prototype testing of the HybridDrive on system level at Winergy's Voerde factory last autumn and GL 2010 certification through TüV Rheinland, the flagship HybridDrive was installed in the 120-metre-diameter-rotored W2E-120/3fc machine this summer.

The 34-tonne HybridDrive claims a drive-train length reduction of 35%–50% compared to conventional geared transmission system designs.

Its gearbox and generator have an efficiency each of 98%, giving the integrated system an efficiency of more than 96.5%.
