The 17 projects in line for power contracts under the government programme add up to some 33.8bn ($3.3bn) rand of investment, the country's energy department said today.

Bids were submitted totalling 6.02GW with 1.47GW awarded.

The South Africans handed out 787MW of wind capacity, with the lowest price coming in at a fully-indexed 664 rand per MWh ($65.3)/MWh bid  by the 110MW Gibson Bay wind project in the Eastern Cape being developed by local group Red Cap.
