The systemwill be installed at a substation in the northern Japanese city of Sendai,Miyagi prefecture, by February 2015. It will offer 20MWh of storage capacity, withmaximum output of 40MW. Toshiba did not disclose the terms of the deal.

This pastsummer, power equipment manufacturer Sumitomo Electric Industries won acontract from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to providea similar large-scale battery, with 60MWh of storage capacity, on the northernJapanese island of Hokkaido.
