The coalition poised to form Germany’s next administration also decided to rule out gas "fracking" for now.

“Nationally, we want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 by at least 40% compared to their 1990 level,” the coalition contract reads.

“Within the European Union, we support a reduction of at least 40% by 2030.” The coalition contract still needs to be approved by an inner-party referendum among members of the Social Democrats (SPD), set for early December, before Chancellor Angela Merkel’s new government can be sworn in.
