On 6 July 1988, an explosion killed 167 people on Occidental Petroleum's Piper Alpha oil production platform in the North Sea, leaving just 59 survivors. By comparison, 11 were killed and 17 injured in the explosion that led to BP's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Thankfully, offshore wind is unlikely to ever witness a disaster on such a scale.
