The new machine — the product of a five-year collaboration between Denmark’s Vestas and UK defence technology outfit QinetiQ — differs from earlier designs that made use of innovative claddings, paints or radar-friendly surface geometries. Instead, the V90-2.0MW turbines will have composite blades and rotors fabricated with proprietary “additives” in the material mix, and towers treated with special coatings, that together have been shown to change the way a wind turbine is “seen” on a radar screen.
