The performance of the flagship 2MW WindFloat1 (WF1) – a 1,200-tonne unit fitted with a Vestas V80 that has delivered almost 3GWh onto the Portuguese grid since its installation last autumn – has convinced EDP of the “maturity” of the floating offshore technology.
“In comparison with other emerging [floating wind turbine] technologies, the WindFloat is a few steps from the market and is becoming a real option for offshore wind energy developers, in particular in 40-metres-plus water depth deployments,” says the company.
