Wind developers are rushing to complete projects to take advantage of the federal production tax credit (PTC) before it expires on 31 December. Most expect total installations this year of 10GW-12GW — up from 6.81GW in 2011 and 5.21GW in 2010. Nordex was the exception, pegging minimum shipments at 9GW. The US record, 10.01GW, was set in 2009.
Speaking at the American Wind Energy Association’s annual Windpower conference, executives from turbine manufacturers admit that even if the outgoing Congress extends the PTC for a year, it would not help many developers, which need at least 18 months to plan and implement projects properly.
