The proposals, put forward by energy regulator Ofgem, come in response to long-standing industry complaints that the current system does not encourage joined-up thinking, and will result in an inefficient and needlessly expensive offshore grid network.
The new rules would make it easier for developers to win consents for links accommodating multiple offshore wind farms.
They may also lead to the UK government playing a role in funding so-called “anticipatory investments”, or offshore cables built in advance of wind farms.
