The German group says the SWT-4.0 model builds on key elements of the technology that underpins its ubiquitous SWT-3.6 machine, adding 15% to annual energy production.

The prototype, which is in place in Østerild, Denmark, is equipped with the 120-metre rotor seen on the SWT-3.6.

But this will soon be upgraded to a 130-metre rotor using 63-metre blades, says Siemens.

The SWT-4.0-130 will be launched commercially in spring next year, with serial production due to start in 2015.
