Utility regulators in Colorado have initially approved Xcel Energy’s $2.5bn investment plan that includes about 1.1GW of new wind power capacity and early phase out of two coal-fired units near the City of Pueblo.

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voted 2-1 in support of Xcel’s “Colorado Energy Plan,” which the state’s largest electric utility says will reduce CO2 emissions by almost 60%, boost renewables sources to about 55% of its energy portfolio there and result in $213m in savings for ratepayers.
