Four crew members were injured when the box section of a crane boom collapsed on Swirl Blue Ocean’s Pacific Osprey offshore wind installation vessel whilst it was berthed alongside at the port of Eemshaven in the Netherlands.

One of the crew members sustained a serious injury during the accident that took place Thursday afternoon, but has now been discharged from the intensive care unit of a local hospital. Three other crew members suffered minor injuries.

All four received prompt medical attention and were taken to hospital as was one other crew member who was suffering from a shock, the Danish offshore wind installation company said.

“The safety and well-being of our people is always our first priority. All support and resources have been mobilised to assist those affected and we will continue to support them and their families through this challenging time,” Swirl Blue Ocean chief executive Mikkel Gleerup said.

“Our team will maintain close management of the incident and has initiated a full and thorough investigation in cooperation with the local authorities.”

The Pacific Osprey has been working on EnBW’s 497MW Hohe See project and at the time of the accident had three monopile foundations and three transition pieces on deck.

The self-elevating wind farm installation vessel was built in 2012 and has a 1,425 ton operating crane capacity.

Next to the Pacific Osprey, Swire Blue Ocean also installs with its sister vessel, the Pacific Orca.
