The UK government has rejected plans for a £1.3bn ($1.6bn) tidal lagoon across Swansea Bay in South Wales, which its backers hoped would act as a prototype for much larger future projects.

An independent UK government-funded review led by former energy minister Charles Hendry had in 2017 supported plans for tidal lagoon schemes, backing the 320MW Swansea Bay pathfinder project involving 16 turbines placed along a breakwater.
