UK utility SSE has been granted planning consent by the Scottish government for the controversial 133MW Strathy South wind farm in Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands.

Local communities support the project due to the promised financial benefits, but conservation groups have held a long-running campaign against the development.

SSE plans to build the 39-turbine development on the site of a non-native conifer tree plantation in the heart of the county’s peatlands.
