Belgium will release a new offshore wind development zone in a bid to reach a total of 4GW off its coasts by 2030, the country’s government said today.

The new 221 sq km area, 34-40km offshore and adjacent to French waters, will be made available for development after 2020, said state secretary for the North Sea Philippe De Backer.

The minister said he expects future offshore wind projects to need no subsidies, reflecting the trend seen in neighbours The Netherlands and Germany.
