Chile’s new president Sebastián Piñera has named Susana Jiménez Schuster as energy minister, with the new government pledging to to continue the country’s successful renewable energy programme, increase competition and further deregulate power trading and investment rules.

“If, a few years ago, the discussion was about how to reduce the cost of energy and build base-load power plants, today we can add other challenges such as massive incorporation of renewable energy and the fast take-off of technology and innovation,” the energy ministry said in a statement soon after Piñera’s swearing ceremony in Santiago on 11 March.
