Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has handed in a so-called strategic wider works ‘final needs case’ for an underwater link between the island of Orkney and the Scottish mainland, in a new attempt to open a path to the UK grid for up to 220MW of wind and marine renewable energy generation.

The project proposed by SSEN to regulatory body Ofgem would lead off with development of a single 220kV subsea cable by October 2022, followed by a second, like-rated line “once further generation has committed and the economic case has been made for the further investment”.
