Wind power flowed from the Oklahoma panhandle to Tennessee along Clean Line Energy Partners’ proposed Plains & Eastern high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission project would not have been economic for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the utility says.

The 720-mile (1,160km), $2.5bn Plains & Eastern proposal, among the highest-profile wind-linked HVDC projects in the US, was effectively shelved in recent weeks, with Clean Line withdrawing from TVA’s interconnection queue – and selling the Oklahoma portion of the project to renewables giant NextEra Energy.
