China plans to launch a five-turbine, home-developed floating wind pilot project by 2020 in the Donghai Sea off Shanghai as a first step to potential large-scale deployment, Recharge has learned.

The project – called Shanghai Deep and Far Sea Offshore Wind Major Demonstration – began life away from the spotlight as a joint research project backed by the Shanghai government, but is now being taken forward by Shanghai Green Environmental Energy, a subsidiary of China’s largest power utility, State Grid.
