Siemens Gamesa will in December start building an innovative 1.5MW system that uses inexpensive rocks as a battery to store heat derived from wind power.

The wind OEM for three years has researched how to convert energy to heat in rock-fill at a testing unit, and plans to commission the ‘Future Energy System’ (FES) storage unit on the Trimet SE aluminium smelter site in the German city of Hamburg's Altenwerder district in the spring of 2019.
