German OEM Nordex Group has won a 180MW order from Vattenfall's Dutch unit Nuon to supply 50 of its N117/3600 turbines to the Wieringermeer project 60km north of Amsterdam.

The order is for a first phase of the Wieringermeer repowering project that is slated to eventually include 100 turbines and by 2020 produce 1.2 terawatt hours of electricity for a nearby international data centre run by Microsoft, Vattenfall said earlier this month.

The wind farm has an has an above-average capacity factor of 42%, helped by very strong winds in the area close to the North Sea averaging 8.6 metres/second.

Due to low noise emissions, the turbines can run without curtailments at full rated power, having a positive effect on the expected energy yield, Nordex says. The relatively low sound level of the N117/3600 is achieved thanks to the turbine's design and the addition of serrations to the rotor blades.

Installation is slated to start in March 2019 and be completed by the end of the year. Nordex Group will set up a local service station for the wind farm.

To date, the OEM has installed wind farms with a combined capacity of almost 300MW in the Netherlands.
