South Korean giant Doosan Heavy Industries continued to ramp back up its offshore wind ambitions by signing a deal with US technology group AMSC over a 5.5MW turbine design.

The 5.5MW turbine expands Doosan’s offshore offering from its current 3MW machine, ahead of an expected rapid growth of offshore wind development off Korea and other Asian nations.

The Korean industrial group acquired the rights to the turbine earlier this year from compatriot Hyundai Electric, which had been developing it in conjunction with AMSC and deployed a prototype in 2014 off South Korea’s Jeju Island.
