An independent investigation into a fire that broke out during trials of MHI Vestas’ 9.5MW V164 prototype at the Danish National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines in Østerild has traced the failure to a component damaged during installation.

The damage to the faulty part, within the turbine’s converter module, took place during a “procedure [that] was unique to a prototype environment”, said the OEM, adding, “as such, none of MHI Vestas’ turbines currently in operation or under construction are at risk”.
