MHI Vestas 8MW gets Burbo deal

The V164-8.0MW

The prototype V164 in Denmark

Denmark's Dong Energy has inked a conditional deal with MHI Vestas Offshore to buy 32 of the turbine maker's V164-8.0MWs for the Burbo Bank Extension project off the northwest coast of England.

The agreement, the terms of which hinge on a final investment decision (FID) for the 256MW project, would be the first commercial order for the giant 8MW offshore machines.

"With the V164-8.0MW offshore wind turbine in commercial use, the competition among the offshore wind turbine manufactures will increase for the benefit of both the industry and the electricity consumers," says Dong executive vice president Samuel Leupold.

"Larger and more cost efficient wind turbines are key elements in the realisation of Dong Energy's strategy towards reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind."

MHI Vestas Offshore was selected in February as the preferred supplier for the delivery of the turbines for Burbo Bank Extension, which has been awarded an FID-enabling Contract for Difference.

The wind farm is located in 3-17 metres of water in Liverpool Bay, seven kilometres offshore.

Based on the formal permits and the timetable, construction is expected to start in 2016.

Dong is considering using monopile, gravity base or jacket foundations for the turbines, which will be connected via an offshore inter-array network to a new offshore substation located on the coast between Prestatyn and Rhyl in Denbighshire, on the Ffrith Beach.

The deal further builds the partnership established between Dong and Vestas in December 2012, when the two companies agreed to collaborate on trials of the prototype of the V164-8.0MW at Denmark's national test centre Østerild, Denmark, to accelerate the development of the turbine technology.

Once online, the Burbo Bank Extension, granted approval by the Crown Estate in 2010, will flow power to more than 230,000 British households.
