MRP in large-scale wind storage test

Developer Mainstream Renewable Power (MRP) is to test large-scale storage at a wind farm in Ireland.

The Dublin-based company said it will take part in a study into the commercial viability of running 2MW of storage connected directly to a 10MW wind facility, and operating it in Ireland’s Single Electricity Market.

The Wind-Storage Hybrid Study will begin in September and be carried out with backing from government body Enterprise Ireland.

MRP said the initiative willlook at integrating wind generation with a mixture of flywheel, synchronous condenser and battery technologies”.

Kevin Donnelly of Enterprise Ireland’s Cleantech Department said: “Storage solutions will be a key enabler for the decarbonised power systems of the future and this assessment should provide valuable data to support appropriate investment.”

MRP said the project will look to develop a general case model for storage deployment.
