15GW of wind on Brazil shortlist

Despite the postponement of Brazil's reserve auction to October 31, 15GW of wind projects have been shortlisted by the federal energy planning authority EPE.

Wind power accounted for 58% of the total capacity registered, which also included solar and waste-to-energy technologies.

According to EPE, 626 wind power projects have been registered and are seeking final clearance to sell power at the auction.

Earlier this month, Brazil's federal government postponed the dates of the reserve auction from 10 October to 31 October, and for the A-5 auction from 12 September to 30 September.

According to EPE, the northeastern state of Bahia accounted for 5.76GW, or 38%, of all wind projects registered.

Rio Grande do Norte, also in the northeastern region, accounted for 2.55GW of wind power projects, while the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, accounted for 2.53GW.

The projects that win the 20-year PPAs at the reserve auction will have to start operation by October 2017. The winning projects at the A-5 auction will have to be operational in 2019.
