VSMC has been tapped to lay the cabling for the UK's £1.5bn ($2.57bn) Dudgeon offshore wind power project off eastern England.

The £88m assignment will involve installation of a pair of 42km export lines and 67 infield cables with a total length of some 100km at the 402MW Statoil-Statkraft development.

Offshore construction work at Dudgeon – a UK Round 2 project that was originally consented at 560MW – is due to start in 2016, with cabling slated to be in place later that year.

The down-scaled wind power project will use 67 SWT-6.0-154 Siemens turbines, under a £516m ($846m) deal with the German OEM.

ABB will supply the two 132 kV export cables that will connect Dudgeon' s offshore substation to landfall at Weybourne Hope, while UK contractor Atkins has been chosen to engineer the monopiles for the development.

Dudgeon was one of five offshore wind projects awarded early contract-for-difference support by the UK government – a process criticised by a report.

Once in operation, the wind farm, which stands in water depths of 18-25m some 30km off the east coast of the UK, will flow electricity to some 400,000 British households.
