Cable vessel bound for Gemini

The giant cable-laying vessel in the frame to install the subsea power and export lines at the Netherlands' 600MW Gemini wind farm has been launched from Damen's shipyard in Galati, Romania.

Built for Dutch offshore contractor Van Oord, the 123-metre-long multipurpose vessel will be equipped with a carousel able to carry more than 5,000 tonnes of cable, and a high-capacity crane.

Van Oord chief executive Pieter van Oord comments that the investment in the Damen vessel "highlights the company's drive to continuously serve new and existing markets by investing in state-of-the-art technology and marine ingenuity".

Cables laid by Van Oord under its €1.3bn EPC contract for Gemini, located off the Dutch Wadden Islands, will tie together 150 4MW Siemens wind turbines.
