The record-low wind bids expected to emerge from Alberta’s renewables tender will change discussions about Canada’s energy future, says David Hickey, head of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy in Canada – but intense cost pressure will make it difficult for western provinces to attract wind factories.

Like all turbine suppliers in Canada, Siemens Gamesa – the product of the recent merger between the wind businesses of Germany’s Siemens and Spain’s Gamesa – is currently focused on winning deals out of Alberta’s 400MW renewables request for proposal.
