Plans for Brazil’s first offshore wind project are underway off the country’s Northeast coast, with a 4-5MW turbine set to power a platform of state oil group Petrobras, local officials told Recharge.

Officials at Cerne, the renewable energy think-tank of the Northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, said they hope the experimental project – of which no further details were immediately available – will mark the start of a whole new market for wind off Brazil’s 8,000km of coastline.
