Swiss player ABB will provide a microgrid to utility WEB Aruba to support the integration of wind and solar, as the Caribbean island races to eliminate fossil fuels from its energy mix by 2020.

The deal will see ABB supply an advanced control system with dynamic load shedding capability that enables the integration of “a complex energy generation portfolio.”

The software, automation and control solutions will also help the regional utility improve forecasting and planning by making 24-hour forecasts of renewable output and system load, and will enable optimisation of operations in real time by calculating the minimum load shed to stabilize frequency.
