Governor Greg Abbott has signed a bill into law that stops local governments in Texas from offering tax breaks for new wind farms near certain military bases, a move developers assert could jeopardize billions of dollars of investment.

The new law takes effect on 1 September.

It applies to projects within 25-nautical miles (46.3kms) of a “base, station, fort, or camp at which fixed-wind aviation operations or training” is conducted by active or reserve units of the US armed forces and Coast Guard, or the Texas National Guard.
