The government in the Canadian province of Ontario has reportedly paid more than C$28m ($21m) to Windstream Energy for having sidelined its 300MW Wolfe Island Shoals offshore wind project in Lake Ontario, with the project’s future still in doubt.

Amid Ontario’s rapid renewables expansion earlier this decade, Windstream in 2010 secured a feed-in tariff with the province for its Wolfe Island Shoals project.
