Sparta, the UK offshore wind power benchmarking scheme, is moving to expand its coverage to wind farms outside British waters, following a first year collecting data from the country’s operating fleet.

The key findings, published in its Portfolio Review 2016, point to the rapid industrialisation of the sector, including that while newer wind farms, further from shore, currently tend to have lower availability but higher capacity factors due to heavier wind streams and more modern turbines, expectations are that the plant-scale projects come will learn to run at higher availability, leading to higher productivity levels.
