Utility E.ON is joining a pioneering initiative to use wind power for stabilising the German grid.

The German group said a wind farm it manages in Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania has been pre-qualified for balancing services by local transmission system operator (TSO) 50Hertz.

The E.ON Connecting Energies energy management unit will include output from 26MW of wind capacity as a provider of negative tertiary balancing power as part of its Virtual Power Plant – a 3.8GW
