Spain’s Acciona Energía has started construction of the $221m, 168MW El Cortijo wind farm in Mexico, the first project contracted in the country’s 2016 renewable energy tender.

El Cortijo will be built with 56 Nordex/Acciona AW 125/3000 machines and is expected to start commercial operations in August 2018.

Located in Tamaulipas state, El Cortijo sold power under a 20-year PPA and 15-year clean energy certificates deal at the first renewable energy tender in March 2016, held following the end of Mexico’s energy policy reform.
