Brazil’s energy minister Fernando Coelho Filho promised Northeastern governors to restart tenders for solar and wind, but the way ahead is still unclear as the country’s oversupply problem first needs to be solved by de-contracting unbuilt and unfinished power generation projects.

“The government needs to know exactly how much capacity will come on line first and then it can hold tenders for renewables,” Edmar Almeida, professor of energy economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro tells Recharge.
