The Canadian government has set a target of eliminating traditional coal-fired generation from the country’s electricity mix by 2030, with much of the gap expected to be filled by renewables.

Hitting the target would mean Canada would be generating 90% of its power from non-carbon-emitting sources by 2030, up from 80% today. The remaining emissions would come from gas-fired plants.

The 2030 target “sends a clear signal to the world that Canada is a great place to invest in clean energy”, says Catherine McKenna, minister of environment and climate change.
