China Southern Power Grid  (CSPG) has signed a $40m deal with technology giant ABB for high-specification converter equipment for the Dianxibei-Guangdong ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission link in the south of the country.

The delivery, for the high-altitude Xinsong station in Yunnan and the Dongfang station in Guangdong, is key to a grid expansion project that will carry 5GW of power over a distance of almost 2,000km to supply electricity to some 10 million people in one of the country’s central manufacturing hubs .
