Wind energy is swiftly becoming a nonpolitical issue in Canada, with even the country's oil-producing western provinces now embracing wind farms, says Robert Hornung, president of the Canadian Wind Energy Association.

“It’s clear the focus of Canada’s wind industry is shifting westward,” Hornung said Tuesday, in his opening remarks at CanWEA’s annual conference and exhibition in downtown Calgary.

While the eastern provinces of Ontario and Quebec once dominated new wind installations in Canada, much of the market over the next decade will be centred in Alberta and Saskatchewan – a testament to the political progress the industry has made.
