New York is thinking big with offshore wind energy, as the state has 39GW of potential energy resource mostly accessible with today’s technology located near metropolitan New York City and Long Island, John Rhodes, chief executive of the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA), told an enthusiastic audience at AWEA Offshore WINDPOWER.

That region and its 10 million or more consumers suffer from grid restraints, high electricity costs and environmental challenges posed by fossil fuel usage for power generation.
